ABOUT EIS

The rapid deployment of clean energy technologies as part of the energy transition implies a significant increase in demand for minerals. Global demand by the automotive industry for raw materials is likely to continue and is predicted to grow 5 to 10 times to current demand, due to the increase of the Electric Vehicule sector (IEA 2021).

Mineral supply-chain disruptions would have long-range impacts on electrification, as well as on energy transition security and on achieving the decarbonization targets.

That is why EIS aims to develop innovative exploration concepts and data analysis tools to secure new sources of critical raw materials for the EU’s economy.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

DEVELOP INNOVATIVE EXPLORATION TOOLS

EIS will develop the “EIS Toolkit” and the “EIS QGIS Wizard”. These tools will be open-source and will provide critical information for the mining sector and geoscientists.

REDUCE EXPLORATION AND MINING FOOTPRINTS

The tools developed by EIS aim to reduce the impact of exploration and mining on nature – making it more sustainable. It will reduce exploration footprints by using the existing exploration data.

RAISE AWARENESS TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC

EIS will raise awareness of the importance of critical raw materials to the EU’s transition, economy, and welfare.
